Who can enrol: you can enrol in Medicare if you live in Australia and you are an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, applying for permanent residency, or a temporary resident covered by a ministerial order. Citizens and permanent residents of Norfolk Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island and Lord Howe Island can also enrol. You may be able to enrol if you are visiting from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.
What you need: different documents depending on your circumstances. To enrol online you and your family members need to live in Australia, have a current passport or ImmiCard, and (if you are not an Australian citizen) valid visa details from the Department of Home Affairs.
How to enrol: online through myGov, or with a Medicare enrolment form (MS004) mailed or emailed to Medicare Enrolment Services with supporting documents. Documents must be PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP, not password protected or in a WinZip or RAR file, no larger than 5MB each and 10MB in total. If you enrol as a family, nominate a contact person for the family card. A Medicare card number comes after enrolment, and the card is sent by mail to the address given.
Visitors from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement can get care as a public patient in a public hospital without enrolling in Medicare.
